Broadband Service

As we continue our journey in the 21st Century we're seeing a shift in how we access information and shop for many products and services. Broadband is highspeed connection to the internet that can be provided by cable internet or DSL (digital subscriber loop). Instead of dial-up internet service we have a LAN type connection to the Internet that is always there. What makes this service different is that there are no "nailed-up" connections like with a phone call. Broadband keeps the connection open to everyone all the time creating a network or cloud type architecture where the information or data is broken up into packets and sent with an address on it. You could think of it like sending a letter; there's information on the inside and the address on the outside. Broadband is similar except the transmission of those envelopes of information take place in the blink of an eye.

    DSL or Cable Broadband Availability

DSL or Cable Broadband Internet Service is here to stay. The service has evolved over the last couple years to be a reliable product. The Phone Company and the Cable providers continue to build-out their networks to be able to provide service to more and more rural areas. If you have a telephone number you can check for Broadband availability at your location. The database is driven by phone numbers, so if you don't have one you might try a neighbor's phone number to check availability.

T1 Pricing is experiencing an evolution that will benefit users of broadband services by making them more affordable for small business users. Over the last several years we have seen a boom and bust in Telecommunications that will be studied for many years. The government came into Telecom and made the Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILEC's) open their doors and allow competitors access to their buildings and networks. This action spawned a tremendous boom of new companies that were created to take advantage of the newly opened markets from the 1996 legislation. The new companies proceeded to build out broadband networks with the mantra if "we build it they will come." Money flowed into the sector like water. I remember hearing some executives joking that they could raise 20 million dollars in an afternoon conference call. The Telecom Equipment Providers (Lucent, Cisco, Nortel, Adtran, Alcatel) were just as responsible. They gave lines of credit to Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC's) and anybody with a half a business plan, so they could get their equipment in the network. The Telecom Service providers stepped up to the plate and built capacity that far exceeded the current demand. When the Telecom bubble burst because revenue and profit were left out of many business plans many companies went bankrupt. This left a tremendous amount of excess capacity that has exhibited downward pressure on broadband pricing. T1 Pricing has continued to decrease because of the increased supply of DS1, OC12 and OC48 systems that had been provisioned by the ILEC's and CLEC's. This has made T1 or PRI Pricing affordable for many small businesses and the advent of Fractional T1 became another affordable option. In the not too distant past, a Integrated T1 was priced over $1,000/month. Because the excess broadband network capacity, today quality DS1 circuits are commonly purchased for $500 or less per month. In many instances, a business with 6 or more lines and internet access can save money every month with an Integrated DS1 or a Fractional T1 circuit.

DSL Availability is increasing everyday. The phone company and cable company understand that broadband service is the future of telecommunications. Today, basic dial tone phone service is a losing proposition for the major telco carriers and competition from satellite providers is putting competitive pressure on cable operators. Basic phone service used to be table stakes or a very dependable revenue stream for telephone companies. Today many consumers are seeking alternatives to basic wireline service by using cellular phones or broadband telephone using VoIP technology. To that end the major telco carriers are aggressively deploying DSL or ADSL service to get a broadband connection the the consumer's residence. Once the broadband connection is established there's additional revenue and the opportunity to grow additional services and protect their existing revenue. Cable companies are experiencing the same market pressure. If they can establish the broadband service, then they can offer dial tone using IP telephone service with VoIP technology while embedding themselves at the residence to also protect their existing revenue stream. Where's all this leading? Ever see the movie "Tombstone" where there's the wild shoot out at the OK Corral? I think we'll continue to see convergence of voice, video and data service while phone and cable companies become telecommunication providers and DSL availability will continue to improve until broadband service is comparable to dial tone.
